TMJ PAIN

TMJ is not a condition, but simply the abbreviation of the proper name of the jaw joint.  It stands for Temporomandibular Joint.  TMD, or temporomandibular disorder refers to the actual condition that causes dysfunction and pain.  The TMJ is involved in chewing, breathing and swallowing and is controlled by very powerful muscles.  Postural distortions of the neck, thoracic spine and shoulders, overuse, and dental problems can lead to TMJ muscle imbalances that cause irritation in the joint.  Symptoms can include popping and clicking of the jaw, jaw, facial and /or ear pain and headaches.

Treatment

It is essential to correct the movement patterns of the joint – the way the mouth opens and closes.  It is also important to correct overall posture, as the TMJ muscles are closely associated with the muscles of the cervical spine.  This is why it is very common to see TMJ associated with neck pain and vice versa.  Treatment includes functional soft tissue therapy (A.R.T.), joint manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine, and functional rehabilitation.  These treatments pertain to the musculoskeletal component of TMD.  If there are dental components to TMD, co-management with a dentist is recommended.
